With our 2024 Annual A Cappella Showcase show and the Northeastern District Fall Contest and Convention now behind us, the North Country Chordsmen and VoxStars turn our attention to the holiday season. We will be dusting off and refreshing our notes on our holiday repertoire as we look forward to upcoming performances. In addition to a couple of private performances, we will be making the rounds at several senior community centers and nursing homes in the Upper Valley the week before Christmas. This year, your best chance to catch us will be at the Woodstock Wassail Weekend festival in Woodstock, Vermont, on December 14. We will be performing at various locations in downtown between 12:30pm and 2:00pm. Hope to see you then. More importantly, we want to wish you and yours the best of the holiday season! |

HANOVER, April 22, 2024 — The choruses and quartets of Hanover, NH Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) continued to shine during the 2024 BHS Northeastern District Spring Convention and Contest held in Cape Cod April 19-20, bringing home several awards. With performances of the song, "I Just Found Out About Love" and debuting their rendition of "Like I'm Gonna Lose You," the VoxStars impressed the judges enough to bring home the Overall Chorus Champions, All Voices Champions, and the Most Improved Chorus Award, within the Granite & Pine Division. The North Country Chordsmen inspired the audience with "Let There Be Peace" and brought levity with "As Long As I Got You," garnering the award for Male Voices Champion in the Granite & Pine Division. Both VoxStars and the Chordsmen scored well enough to compete in the Fall competition. The chapter saw the debut of two new quartets this year. Male Voices Quartet Blue Streak performed "As Long As I Got You" and "Over The Rainbow," and advanced to the Fall competition. All-Voices Quartet 91 North performed the classics "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Down Our Way," departing the contest with the award for Novice All Voices Quartet Champions in the Granite & Pine Division. We're so very proud of all of our performers and can't wait to perform on stage again in autumn. |
Our choruses were so fortunate to have the insights and inspirations from Cay Outerbridge at our coaching session on Wednesday, March 27! The North Country Chordsmen unified their vocal timbre and the VoxStars added more complexity to the emotional journey of their songs. Cay also helped several of our quartets in mini-workshop sessions. Cay is a voice teacher, choral conductor, vocal arranger, learning track producer, and barbershop harmony singer, based out of Lowell, MA. He sings bass with the award-winning quartet, Daily Special, and is the frontline director for the award-winning men's chorus, Vocal Revolution. We are so grateful for Cay's time and are looking forward to putting what we learned into practice when we compete at the Northeastern District Eastern Regional Convention & Contest in April. The BHS Hanover Chapter held its Installation of Officers and family pot-luck dinner on January 24. We were honored to welcome NED (NorthEastern District) President Mike Savard and his wife, Mary Savard, to our chapter event and appreciate Mike's leading of the installation ceremony. The weather was less cooperative, providing sleet, snow, and icy road conditions, which kept several members and new officers away, but there was plenty of delicious food to eat for those who made it, as well as tasty desserts. The chapter awarded our Music Director, Dan Falcone, with the Barbershopper of the Year award, presented by last year's recipient, Brent Scudder! The evening saw the debut of our first all-women quartet (quintet, actually), Girl's Night Out, who performed "The Story of the Rose (Heart of My Heart)", and after the official ceremonies concluded, the North Country Chordsmen performed "Tin Roof Blues" and "Let There Be Peace On Earth", while the VoxStars entertained with "Everything" and the madrigal version of "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls. Our combined choruses ended with our signature song, "Seven Bridges Road." Before the cleaning up for the evening, everyone gathered in a circle for "Keep the Whole World Singing." Continuing in their respective roles from 2023, the officers for 2024 are:

How fast the summer has flown by! While many of our members were able to find adventures through travel, we still sang through the season. We are honored to have been able to sing on the stage of the Woodstock Town Hall, on the Dartmouth Green for the Town of Hanover's 4th of July Celebration event, on the Lebanon Promenade for the annual Nexus Music Festival, as well as on the dry pavilion at The Fells Historic Estate and Gardens during one of the heaviest rainfalls of the summer! Our quartets also had opportunities to perform for a wedding and during Hanover Parks and Recreation's Streetfest. We ended our summer season with a beautiful evening show at the Eastman Golf Links Clubhouse, what has become an annual event for us. Thank you to all of our supporters and for the invitations to sing for your audience! We look forward not only to singing for you again next summer, but our Annual Showcase and Holiday Season are just around the corner. Photo by Dakota Roos on Unsplash |
North Country Chordsmen and VoxStars had a great time performing and competing at the NED Eastern Regional 2023 Convention and Competition. And we took home prizes! In the Granite and Pine Division (New Hampshire and Maine), NCC were the Overall Chorus Champions, Men's Chorus Champions, and Most-Improved Overall Chorus, while the VoxStars were Mixed Harmony Chorus Champions in the division. (Thanks to the Apigo Family for the pics!). Two of our quartets, Bated Breath and Grade A Fancy also competed against 34 other quartets! Check out our photo gallery for more pics! |
With Thanksgiving behind us and bellies still full, the North Country Chordsmen and VoxStars kicked off our series of holiday performances on December 4 at the Howe Library, in Hanover, NH. The groups performed a selection of holiday and seasonal songs, invited the audience to participate in our M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E tag sing, and shared our joy of music with library patrons. Afterwards, a few members joined other singers from the Upper Valley to sing at the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on the Dartmouth green. Other scheduled performances:
